SAPIENS - SAPIENS

July 10, 2012
Quito, Ecuador

Location: Gonzalo Burgos Skatepark, La Carolina Park

This was an experimental project that combined graffiti, performance, sculpture, and improvisation. At that time in Ecuador’s history, there was constant persecution of freedom of the press, and the President himself stated that graffiti was not art. Consequently, I constructed an object called MURO (Wall), placed it without authorization in a park in Quito, and carried out an act that unfolded in the following phases:

1) The Muro object was transported to La Carolina Park in Quito and placed—without permits—inside the Gonzalo Burgos skatepark.

2) Days later, the action combining improvisation and graffiti took place. A ritual-like procession moved through the skatepark’s tunnels to reach the area where the Muro object had previously been positioned.

3) The object then served as the site for a ritual action, followed by the creation of graffiti.

4) Days later, the object was confiscated by park authorities and remained in storage for six months.
