Quito, Ecuador
Location: Plaza del Teatro Sucre
In 2015, I proposed a joint project to the cartoonist "Bonil" (Javier Bonilla) using one of my objects—specifically, the "Wall" object. Bonil accepted my proposal, and thus this project was born. Bonil had been targeted by Rafael Correa’s government and prosecuted for his cartoons; there was a general climate in the country of persecution against freedom of expression. It was against this backdrop that we carried out this joint project.
The event unfolded in two stages: first, a performance I gave before the public at the Plaza del Teatro (where the "Wall" object was installed), followed by an intervention on the "Wall" object by Bonil and a group of guest cartoonists, including the Brazilian Caco Galhardo and the Argentine Bernardo Erlich.
Performer: Damián Toro
