ANTI AUCTORITAS

September 10, 1996
Quito, Ecuador

Location: Independence Square and the Government Palace of Ecuador

During the administration of Abdalá Bucaram (1996–1997), acts of violence and corruption unprecedented in Ecuador came to light. Nepotism and *machismo*—among other "-isms"—were the order of the day; threats made with firearms by government ministers against public sector employees, as well as insults hurled by the President, were commonplace during this period of Ecuadorian history.

This performance emerged from that atmosphere as an anarchist-style reaction, proposing the dismantling of the status quo established by the institutions of the time.
The performance unfolded in four stages:

1) The performer, Damián Toro, arrives at Independence Square in Quito and distributes leaflets bearing the text "Aesteticum Improvis Ahctum / Anarkism, Dominum, Kunst"

2) The performer waves two flags in the square—one black and one red (the colors of anarchism)—then enters the outer corridor of the Government Palace and waves the flags from the main balcony. He then descends and begins walking through the streets of the city's historic center, making his way to the area near the Sucre Theater

3) The performer sits in the street facing the square; amidst heavy vehicle traffic, he brings the flow of cars to a halt. Police arrive on the scene. Bus and car drivers complain, and the police ask the artist to stand up.

4) After sitting on the asphalt for a time, the performer leaves the area.
