BURN
January 5, 2013
Quito, Ecuador
Location: Artist’s Studio
Burn was an action and performance piece that took place in my studio in Quito, Ecuador. It involved using three objects to create a large-scale installation. Consequently, the action unfolded in three stages.
1) It begins at the object known as "Wall" (*Muro*) with a graffiti-making activity; the public is invited to participate.
2) In another area, where the object known as "Bed" (*Cama*) is located, one of the performers delivers a brief spoken-word piece. A sawdust effigy lies on the bed. These sawdust effigies—human-shaped figures—are a traditional part of New Year's celebrations in Ecuador; they are burned to symbolize change and transformation.
The final part of the action takes place in a different zone where the object known as "Cage" (*Jaula*) has been placed. Performer Roberto Jaramillo is confined inside it. He is subsequently released; the sawdust effigy is moved from the bed to another part of the installation and set on fire, burning until it is completely consumed. This marks the end of the performance.
