ANCESTRAL RITUAL
January 13, 1998
Quito, Ecuador
Location: Zona 51
Zona 51 was a venue dedicated to experimental art, performance art, and other forms involving research and the use of technology in art. Although it was short-lived, it was the site where this action took place. The performance unfolded in the following stages:
1) The lead performer uses an axe to chop wood and then burns it, creating a large flame.
2) Performers Damián Toro and José Luis Celi move through the area, which is set up with several empty fuel storage tanks. Here, they engage in a dialogue that eventually escalates into a fight (climbing up and down the tanks, using a rope to communicate, etc.). Their costumes are reminiscent of professional wrestling attire.
3) The lead performer is subdued by José Luis Celi and carried in a ritual procession—borne by Celi and members of the audience—until placed on the ground near the spot where the wood was burned. At this point, the performance begins to fade out until it concludes.
